The Anti-ad

This week APES has been discussing the world's waste stream. Throughout the course of the year we've been working towards an understanding of the ways in which American consumerism impact the rest of the world. After a great class discussion on Monday I ran across an article about outdoor clothing company Patagonia's new marketing campaign.

Patagonia already has fairly serious cred with respect to sustainability. This add campaign, however, is something all together new. How often do you see a company tell you NOT to purchase their products, then go on to outline some of the ways that product creation and consumption harm the earth? Obviously this is a clever marketing strategy, but I think credit should be given where it is due. I applaud companies who are willing to be more transparent about the true costs of the products that we purchase.
